I work under Dr. Alex Poplawsky in his studies of awake mouse fMRI focuses on observing the activation of specific spatial regions of the olfactory bulb through odor stimulation. To effectively carry out experiments, a proprietary olfactometer that delivers odors to the mouse in a controlled manner was constructed. I was tasked with modifying the olfactometer. The additions I have made are:

  • Odor Channel Voltage Indicator circuit

    • Provides specific voltage reading for each of the 8 odor channels to make sure the right stimulation is administered

  • Arduino controlled variable odor concentration administration

    • Uses a voltage activated variable valve to administer odors at different concentrations to study the levels at which habituation can occur for stimulations in the olfactory bulb.

My most recent project involves fMRI data visualization. I am currently in the process of writing a MATLAB code that takes the tomographic 3D slices from the fMRI experiments and converting to a Flat Map which will show the functional data from all slices of the olfactory bulb onto one 2D image. This is done by extracting a circular layer from one slice and opening it to linearize. This is done for every slice and they are stack horizontally to show functional data for that layer at all slices in a single figure.
